Airplane Snacks at Home Is the Latest Brand Attempt at Normalcy
United AirlinesYou can now get Stroopwafels, Biscoffs, and plastic cheese trays shipped directly to your house, if you miss them so much
We all miss things about travel — mostly the “being somewhere else-ness” and the “not-my-houseyness” of it all. But some people, especially those who travel regularly for work, might miss some of the more mundane aspects of travel that, for them, are rituals of normalcy. Case in point: this TikTok trend of people using treadmills to mimic baggage carousels or running with luggage to catch a plane.
Some are even missing the famously just-passable in-flight food and drink offerings of America’s major airlines. And while peanuts, canned tomato juice, and ginger ale are still remarkably well-stocked on grocery store shelves, some specialty items are trickier to get — especially since most airlines have ceased in-flight snack service.
A few companies are jumping in to help, however, including Imperfect Foods, which paired with Jet Blue to offer the airline’s surplus cheese and snack trays to the public via its online produce marketplace for $2.99 each, and Delta Airlines, who has been donating the absolutely perfect Biscoff cookies to front-line workers. Now United Airlines is encouraging nostalgic flyers to order its signature in-flight Stroopwafels for home delivery (United discount codes for dayzzz), and sharing recipes (like this actually-really-great sounding one for stroopwafel banana bread) to recreate the 35,000-foot dessert course in isolation.
So while check-in queues and sardine-style seating may be things of the travel past, airplane food — at least for now — lives on.
