The Pantry Staples ‘Top Chef’ Judge Gail Simmons Keeps Stocked in Her NYC Kitchen
Simmons shares some of the cabinet and refrigerator items she loves to have around
Top Chef star Gail Simmons typically spends a lot of time eating other people’s food — at restaurants, at food festivals, and on TV under the camera lights while in judging mode.
Now, sheltering at home like so many other folks, she says she’s making more use of her Brooklyn kitchen than ever before, and going through groceries and pantry items at a quicker clip, too. But with some clever storage hacks (storing spices in reusable glass jars of all the same sizes, empty dry goods out into narrow plastic containers), she still manages to cram a lot in just a few cupboards and her fridge.
Simmons opened up her pantry on Instagram Live as part of the Eater @ Home virtual event series and shared just a few of her favorite cabinet and refrigerator staples:
- Yamaki Kappo Shirodashi Concentrate (“To make quick dashi broth!”)
- Atlantic Sea Farms Sea-Chi (“This is sustainable kimchi made out of seaweed that my friend from Vermont sent me.”)
- Siggi’s Coconut Yogurt
- Ajinomoto Ajipanda MSG (“This is my novelty bottle of MSG.”)
- Rice Select Sushi Rice
- Shirakiku Yuzu Extract (“We add to this water and club soda.”)
- Bragg Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
- Marmite (“It’s brought me a lot of comfort recently, just having toast with butter and Marmite.”)
- Carnation Sweetened Condensed Milk (“To make my emergency dulce de leche.”)
- NY Shuk Herby Harissa Spice Blend (“This is a great New York brand — they make these spice blends that I really love.”)
- Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps
- Worthy Picks Produce Shopper vegetable bags (“We’re trying hard to eliminate the plastic... These are amazing bags. They’re more breathable than plastic, which is good for some things and not for others, but they seem to preserve things really well.”)
