Michelin Announces 2020 Stars for Hong Kong and Macau
Sushi Shikon earns three stars another year after moving locations | Sushi Shikon [Official]André Chiang’s Sichuan Moon debuts in the guide with two stars, and Sushi Shikon earns three stars for another year
Today, Michelin released its latest international dining guide. From a ceremony in Macau, the fine-dining arm of the French tire company announced the 2020 Michelin stars for Hong Kong and Macau.
According to the South China Morning Post, there are two new restaurants in the three-star category. Hong Kong’s Forum, a Cantonese restaurant that offers both a la carte and set menus, moved up from two stars to three stars this year. Sushi Shikon also gets three stars in 2020, but not exactly for the first time. Although Michelin counts the restaurant as new thanks to a new location in the Landmark Mandarin Oriental, the high-end sushi restaurant has appeared in the Michelin guide with three stars since 2014, according to its website.
The list of new two-star restaurants is just as short. Hong Kong French restaurant Arbor was promoted to two stars after earning its first star in the guide last year. And Macau casino restaurant Sichuan Moon, from acclaimed chef André Chiang, makes its debut in the Michelin guide with two stars.
In 2017, Chiang made headlines after announcing plans to close his eponymous Singapore restaurant along with a request to return its two Michelin stars. Although Michelin did not include Restaurant André in the 2018 guide to Singapore, Michelin ignored Chiang’s request that his Taipei restaurant Raw not be included in any Michelin guide out of a desire to “focus on educating, developing others, and cooking,” rather than chasing awards. (Raw has two Michelin stars in the 2019 guide.) But Chiang is pleased about his Macau restaurant’s new stars, telling the South China Morning Post, “It’s fantastic.”
Lifestyle Asia reports that 10 Hong Kong restaurants received a star for the first time in the 2020 guide, including the Hong Kong location of Roganic from British chef Simon Rogan; Thai restaurant Aaharn from chef David Thompson, of Nahm fame; and (naturally) multiple French restaurants: Gaddi, Louise, and L’Envol. Cantonese restaurant Fook Lam Moon regained a star after losing it in 2017.
There are 90 total restaurants with stars in the 2020 guide, 70 located in Hong Kong and 20 in Macau. See the full list below:
