Michelin Announces 2020 Stars for Thailand

Two restaurants were upgraded to two stars in the guide to Bangkok, Phuket, Phang-nga, and Chiang Mai

This week, Michelin launched its third guide to Thailand, covering Bangkok, Phuket, Phang-Ng, and for the first time, Chiang Mai. There are just 29 starred restaurants in the guide, up from 27 last year. But while the French tire company has once again refrained from awarding three stars (the most possible) to any restaurant in Thailand, it did promote two restaurants to the two-star category for the first time.

Michelin reports that R-Haan in Bangkok gained a star this year for its multi-course menu featuring regional and Royal Thai cuisine. Fellow Bangkok restaurant Sorn joined R-Haan with two stars for the first time. The 40-seat restaurant, which reserves just 10 percent of its seats for foreign guests, specializes in southern Thai cuisine.

There are five restaurants in the 2020 guide with two stars, an improvement over last year’s four. Gaggan, the renowned Indian restaurant from chef Gaggan Anand, closed in 2019, dropping it from the list.

The one-star category also lost a restaurant — the Bangkok location of L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon closed in 2019 — but it gains four new restaurants. French restaurant Chef’s Table, revamped Thai tasting menu 80/20, and 16-seat chef’s table Table 38 all appear in the Michelin guide for the first time. Khao, a Thai restaurant with both a la carte and tasting menu options, was bumped up to one star for the first time after being featured in the non-starred section of the guide. Raan Jay Fai, the only Michelin-starred street vendor in Thailand, retains her star in 2020, despite her regrets over earning it in the first place.

Although, the Michelin guide purportedly includes Bangkok, Phuket, Phang-Ng, and Chiang Mai, Phuket farm-to-table restaurant Pru is the only location outside of Bangkok with a star. Phang-Ng and Chiang Mai are instead represented in the guide with Bib Gourmand (“good quality, good value cooking”) and Michelin Plate (a “sign of very good food”) designations.
