Your weekly dispatch from the ‘Add to Cart’ newsletter

This post originally appeared on November 5, 2019, in “Add to Cart” — the weekly newsletter for people who love shopping (almost) as much as they love eating. Subscribe now.

We’ve officially entered the shopping-est time of year: Black Friday is in sight and you’d no longer be deemed over-eager to start working on your holiday gift list. On the one hand, it’s a stressful time; I find the obsessive coverage of Black Friday (and Cyber Monday, and Small Business Saturday, and on and on…) exhausting and not a little bleak. On the other, I love when gift guides start popping up and great products I didn’t know about float across my radar.

That includes Eater’s gift guide, which is coming… today! The photo below is a hint at what’s to come. We’ll roll out some beautiful (in my opinion) collections of gifts and continue to publish fun, product-filled, and useful gifting stories for the rest of November.

The other gifting thing we’re kicking off: Ask Add to Cart. For November and December, my inbox (ellie@eater.com) is open for your holiday- and gift-related questions. Can we help you find the perfect present? Is there a product you’re considering you think we might have tested out already? Send all your gift-giving questions my way and the Eater team and I will do our best to answer them, either directly or in this newsletter.

Things to buy

A gift guide hint...
  • Brightland has released its latest Instagram-worthy olive oil bottles, this time with artwork by fashion illustrator the Cartorialist as a special holiday edition.
  • This Haand ceramic pasta bowl is beautiful enough to sit on any restaurant table — which makes sense, considering Haand is behind tons of restaurant plates and servingware, including those at Wayan and Daily Provisions in NYC.
  • The GIR silicone spatula is so good, professional baker and cookbook author Erin McDowell owns at least 25 of them.

Things to know

  • You’ve probably coveted a ceramic plate or bowl by Jono Pandolfi at a restaurant without even realizing it. This new video, part of Eater’s Handmade series, gives a behind-the-scenes look at how the ceramicist’s team creates the dishes beloved by some of the industry’s top restaurants. (And this Q&A with Pandolfi himself talks about how he got there.)
  • Chrissy Teigen has launched her own site, Cravings by Chrissy Teigen, and… I like it? I didn’t want to, since Chrissy is so goddamn endearing and everyone falls all over everything she does. And the site, with its bright colors, cheesy music, and kid-friendly graphics, is in no way cool or particularly innovative. But I found myself watching this entire baking video from start to finish (something I’ve literally never done in my life). Extra points for the fact that Chrissy doesn’t pretend her life is something it’s not (at one point, she goes to stick the strawberries in the fridge… then her other fridge, then her other fridge).
  • Another launch of interest is the Atlantic’s Material World column, in which journalist Amanda Mull offers consistently insightful analysis of every shopping trend and phenomenon worth knowing.
  • Important PSA: Food52 is offering free shipping from now through Thanksgiving. (I recommend these Opinel “brunch knives.”)
