A New Aeropress, ‘Turmeric’ Cookware, and More Things to Buy This Week

On Monday, the Cut provided a true public service by drawing attention to “Jennifer Lawrence’s wedding registry guide,” which is not her wedding registry (she is a celebrity, so presumably has literally everything a newlywed could ever need) but a guide for Amazon shoppers to use to stock their own registries.

The guide is divided into the expected categories, with explanations presumably from Lawrence, if Lawrence were a Barbie with an algorithmically generated voicebox. (“I love to host people at home. Whether it’s a few friends for drinks or a larger dinner party, here are a few favorite party essentials that will make sure your guests have everything they need.” Also: “I love trying new recipes.”) The suggested items range from the expected (Le Creuset Dutch oven, John Boos cutting board, Joule sous vide) to the slightly expected (pizza stone, pasta maker).

Which is unfortunate — not only because the recommendations are a snooze, or because I’d rather see Lawrence’s actual registry (stalking celebrity wedding registries is a classic internet pastime), but also because it means that celebrity sponcon has fully come for wedding registries. Priyanka Chopra also did an Amazon registry guide, while dozens of other stars now have Amazon “Celebrity Stores,” landing pages for their product “faves,” or their own branded products. It’s a logical move, I suppose, like endorsing products on your personal Instagram, but on a platform where it’s infinitely easier to buy things.

I wonder what kind of cut J-Law gets if I buy a Ninja Foodi from her guide.

Things to buy

• HUGE news for coffee fans: AeroPress has announced its first product in forever. The AeroPress Go is similar to the cult-favorite original, a small compact plastic device that brews coffee on the go in under a minute and is a go-to for frequent travelers, but this version comes with a microwavable mug and a lid to make it even more travel-friendly. Pre-order now to get it in November.
• There are also plenty of AeroPress-adjacent accessories out there. The Huckberry deluxe travel coffee kit includes a traditional AeroPress, 8 ounces of beans from Four Barrel, a mini Hario mill, a travel mug, and a rugged-looking bag to store it all in.
• Brave enough to use a blowtorch in the kitchen? The Bernzomatic TS8000 torch is a good bet, as tested on camera this week on The Kitchen Gadget Test Show.
• Two good sales to know: Over at Walmart, you can get a 3.5-quart KitchenAid stand mixer for just $199 through September 27. And on Food52, Staub cookware in “turmeric” (the color is actually closer to pumpkin — I’m sorry, pumpkin spice) is on sale.

• For anyone who’s ever been tempted to purchase a tomato face mask, a kale facial tonic, or a kombucha toner, this Vox.com deep dive into health food’s invasion of the beauty aisle is very good.
• H-E-B is expanding in Texas, which might not sound newsworthy to anyone outside of Texas, except that the beloved grocery store is actually the 12th-largest privately held company in the country. Priya Krishna explained the phenomenon in a feature for Eater (which was also recently shouted out in The Best American Food Writing 2019, publishing October 1).
• If you’re not eating anchovies already, it’s time to give those little suckers a try.
• As if WeWork didn’t have enough problems this week, there’s this.
