Canada Has a Real-Life Hamburglar and They’re Hacking the McDonald’s App

The Canadian Hamburglar has ordered thousands of dollars worth of McNuggets and poutine on customers’ accounts
Canadian “Hamburglar” terrorizes McDonald’s app users with thousands of dollars in fraudulent charges
Since January, there have been reports of a mysterious fraudster (or fraudsters) known in the Canadian media as the Quebec Hamburglar, who hacks McDonald’s app accounts and racks up hundreds or even thousands of dollars in charges on unsuspecting customers’ linked credit and debit cards by ordering meals for pick up in the province. The latest victim of this criminal enterprise, CBC News reports, is a Toronto tech writer, Patrick O’Rourke, whose app account was used to order $2,034 ($1,512 USD) worth of McDonald’s menu items in Montreal, including McNuggets, Big Macs, McFlurries, and poutine (oh, Canada).
While his bank eventually refunded the charges, O’Rourke told CBC News he isn’t pleased with McDonald’s response: “To me, it just seems a little bit negligent … like they don’t really care. McDonald’s should at least be sending out a mass email to everyone that has the account [to say], ‘Hey, you should reset your password.’” Reddit and Twitter are full of unhappy customers who have similarly been forced to turn to their banks and credit card companies instead of just receiving refunds from McDonald’s. Until the fast-food company improves the security of their app by adding two-factor authentication (ha), or their customer service by proactively warning and refunding customers (ha!), friends to the north, consider yourselves warned: best remove all payment options and delete the McDonald’s app from your phone.

The 38 Essential Restaurants in Barcelona
April 25, 2019

April 25, 2019 Admin 0 Comments
Where to find Mediterranean seafood, crisp paella, perfect tapas, and aged steaks carved tableside in the Catalonian capital
From Barcelona's towering churches and bustling avenues to the sun-drenched beaches and idyllic plazas, it's obvious why this city captures visitors' hearts and refuses to let go. As befits the city's Mediterranean lifestyle, you can eat incredibly well here, and often for not very much money. However, it's also quite easy to have a downright disappointing meal if you settle for any old paella-slinging bar along Les Rambles or La Barceloneta.
This map aims to steer visitors toward sure-fire success in the overwhelming world of Barcelona dining. Obvious essentials like pintxos and paella are included (both great but neither authentically Catalan), and be sure to seek out local gems like stinky cheeses, pickled anchovies, artisan vermouth, grilled squid, blood sausages, craft beers, and giant goblets of gin and tonic, followed by 3 a.m. churros and chocolate to soak up the booze. This list of 38 essential food experiences is just the tip of the iceberg, though it offers a great variety of food (and prices) you can't find at home.
April 2019 Update
As always, some places must leave the list to make room for others. Here are a few of the highlights:
- The classic basque beef haven of Ipar-Txoko has been swapped for contemporary fine dining restaurant Mano Rota.
- The craft beer trend shows no signs of slowing down in Barcelona, with new bars opening up all the time that specialize in local artisan brews. To spread the love, Ølgod has been replaced by the BierCab gastropub this year.
- Bar Cañete remains a Barcelona mainstay for classic tapas and an unmatched, lively atmosphere, but this year Fismuler takes its place.
- Cakes are out and ice cream is in. This year, Bubó cake shop has been toppled by the Rocambolesc ice cream shop, brought to us by the ever-evolving and creative Roca brothers, of El Celler de Can Roca.
- Though the classic butifarra sausage sandwiches of Conesa will always have a place in our hearts, this year it’s time that the Fish and Chips Shop gets a turn at satisfying our cravings.
Prices per person, excluding alcohol
$ = Less than €15 (less than USD 16)
$$ = €16 - €39 (USD 18 to USD 44)
$$$ = €40 - €66 (USD 45 to USD 73)
$$$$ = More than €66 (more than USD 74)

The United States of Mexican Food
April 23, 2019
Admin

April 23, 2019 Admin 0 Comments
It would be hard to find the pendejo who would argue with a straight face that Mexican food isn’t one of the foundational cuisines of the United States. But there are still two big myths about Mexican food in America: that there is a single, coherent entity called “Mexican food,” and that its most ubiquitous forms are somehow less legitimate, less vital, and simply less good than its most exalted incarnations, which are seen as somehow more genuine, more distinct, and above all, more authentic — which, within the wasteland that is American consumer culture, has become our most cherished value, whether we’re talking about politicians or picaditas.
But from NYC to LA, from Georgia to Oregon, and everywhere in between, there are as many homegrown Mexican foods as there are ways to make guacamole — not even counting the ones that use peas. The bodega taqueria is slowly remolding New York’s long-derided Mexican food scene in the image of Poblano cuisine; birria, the fiery red meat stew of Jalisco, is increasingly the default winter warmer in Detroit’s Mexican restaurants; and though brisket makes more noise these days, is there any question that Tex-Mex, the final form of border ranch cooking, is the One True Cuisine of the Lone Star State?
The warped lens of “authenticity” may be applied by Yelp junkies to many cuisines — long after the heat death of the universe would be too soon to hear someone jabber about “hole-in-the-wall” noodle joints again — but none are quite so distorted by that perspective as Mexican food, which is often viewed, even by those who style themselves as authorities, as a platform for a never-ending Authenticity Olympics. Few would deny the pleasures of barbacoa in its most rustic or traditional forms, but what could be more authentic than the Parmesan-dusted Kansas City taco or the cheesy, curry-dipped roti quesadilla of Yuba City — each the organic product of two distinct communities thrown together by circumstances of labor, migration, and institutionalized racism?
The United States of Mexican Food is about these two ideas: that regional Mexican food doesn’t stop at the border, and that the dishes and cuisines that have developed across the country — which are all authentic to a specific people, place, and time — aren’t just frequently delicious, they’re worthy of the same reverence as the most hallowed icons of Mexican-American cuisine. Except for a sickly, sad salad bowl from Chipotle — those, no one should eat.

The FDA Has Loosened Its Draconian Grasp on Frozen Cherry Pie
April 22, 2019
Admin

April 22, 2019 Admin 0 Comments
Deregulation fever has finally arrived in the fruit dessert section of the grocery store
If you’ve enjoyed a store-bought frozen cherry pie in the United States between now and 1977, a few things — beyond death and taxes — were guaranteed: Official standards set by the Food and Drug Administration requires that the pie be at least 25 percent cherries, as measured by weight; and the cherries must be largely unblemished, with no more than 15 percent marred by scabs, discolorations, scars, or other abnormalities.
But in a world of uncertainty, even that is small comfort is being taken away from us. The FDA, following through on recently resigned Commissioner Scott Gottlieb’s 2018 promise to “de-regulate frozen cherry pie,” will begin the process of revoking the longstanding standards of identity defining what makes a frozen — mind you, not baked and then frozen — cherry pie in the U.S., per emails viewed by the Associated Press.
The move is just one tiny part of the Trump administration’s larger deregulation agenda, which tackles everything from asylum seeker restrictions to hog carcass cleaning rules. “This is a down payment on a comprehensive effort to modernize food standards to reduce regulatory burden and remove old-fashioned barriers to innovation,” Gottlieb wrote about the FDA’s planned regulatory work in October.
But do not fret over the future of your frozen cherry pie. As far as deregulation goes, this particular to-do item is tied to an outdated demand that even the FDA can’t explain: “We likely issued the one standard because we were petitioned to,” an FDA spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal back in 2006. (Other fruit pies aren’t governed by similar standards.)
The American Bakers Association has been asking the FDA to ax the standards since at least 1997 and last week told the AP that the revocation likely wouldn’t make a huge difference for the industry, as “members are producing cherry pies with more than enough cherries.” Don’t hurt ’em with that flex, ABA!
Next up on the FDA’s deregulation agenda? The similarly singled-out French dressing, defined as “the separable liquid food or the emulsified viscous fluid food prepared from vegetable oil(s) and one or both of the acidifying ingredients specified.” Yum! The more contentious battle over the definition of “milk” (cow’s vs. soy vs. rice vs. almond, etc.) has only just begun — so consider the discussion surrounding frozen cherry pie as a mere foil-wrapped warm-up.

Where to find cheese-filled bourekas, puffy mandu, vegan haute cuisine, and fully loaded pita in the buzziest food town on the eastern Mediterranean
Today Eater returns to Tel Aviv, Israel, to check in on 17 newish restaurants that have been garnering some serious buzz. Once again, we’ve tapped local food writer Keren Brown to offer her picks for the hottest openings of the past 12 months.
“Over the last year, Tel Aviv has been all about Asian cooking,” says Brown, “with restaurants dedicated to ramen, sushi, and all kinds of inventive Pan-Asian small plates.” But at the same time, she says, Israelis are starting to embrace their own cuisine like never before, with chefs proudly showcasing their backgrounds, cultures, and the local Israeli produce that is the core of this country’s cuisine. “Israeli street food is now bigger and better than ever — even the fanciest of chefs want to get their hands dirty and create something that you can eat on the go. Out with the rules and in with the pita.”
Looking for the tried-and-true essentials? Check out the 38. Looking to eat on the cheap? There’s a guide for that, too. Here now, and in geographic order, is the Eater Heatmap to Tel Aviv.

Where to find biscuits and gravy, kibbeh and falafel, tacos al pastor, and deep-dish pizza in one of the Great Lakes’ greatest food towns
Today, Eater returns to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to focus on 10 newish restaurants that have been garnering some serious buzz. Once again, local writer Todd Lazarski has offered up his picks for the hottest openings of the past 12 months.
“With a fresh downtown arena — Fiserv Forum, home of the NBA-leading Bucks — a gleaming new streetcar, and next year’s Democratic National Convention on the horizon, the city feels like it’s turned a page on its Rust Belt past,” says Lazarski.
Among his picks for this year is everything from soup dumplings and high-end Korean fried chicken to rock ’n’ roll French fare, Vietnamese tacos, neighborhood-centric food halls, and activism-minded community collectives. “But of course,” says Lazarski, “we still have plenty of beer, cheese, and sausage.”
Without further ado, and in geographic order, here’s the Eater Heatmap to Milwaukee.
